The Falling Tower

Though I don’t believe in divination per se, I consider systems such as tarot (or astrology, or the I Ching) as ways to delve into your unconscious; or, in other words, as symbolic systems that can help you make sense of the tumult of phenomena around you.

Last night I met a guy who associated the Tower with revelation; with the creative destruction that attends the growth of knowledge and the abandonment of old ways of thought. The philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn called such periods of creative destruction “paradigm shifts.”

The Tower card also recalls the biblical story of the Tower of Babel: of the Hebrew god’s anger at the arrogance of his creation.

The Falling Tower is a potent symbol: It reminds me to be wary of certainty.
